Daniel Bilici (1990) bought his first camera, a small pocket-sized point-and-shoot Canon, when he travelled to the USA to work as a lifeguard in 2011. He was keen to document every waking moment of his new American life. When he returned home to Chisinau, Moldova, he found himself still taking pictures. This turned into a decade-long routine of carrying a camera everywhere, and tens of thousands of frames.
He lived in Lund, Sweden, and later in Kyiv, Ukraine. When the full-scale Russian invasion began, he moved back home to Moldova once again, and photography stopped being only a way of keeping a record. Since 2022 he has photographed Chisinau continuously, across the political and social divides of a country turning west: the street, the protests, the wine festivals and the religious holidays. This work is gathered in three series, Streets of Chisinau, Jesus & Wine and Democracy Loading.
His photographs have been exhibited in Berlin and Chisinau, and his work has been featured by ARTE and Deutschlandfunk Kultur. He lives and works in Chisinau.
